"A desire to
recreate personal visions of life forms and patterns in suspended animation has
fueled our adventures into the uses of glass for light-gathering furniture
pieces. Glass tiles are given different textures and treatments to encourage
tactile and visual involvement within the context of strong and clean furniture
lines. Elements of Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Arts & Crafts schools are
influences."
Colin & Lisa Badger are designer-artisans who create fused glass,
wrought iron, brass & wood furniture and architectural items to a high
standard. Their work has appeared at the Philadelphia Furniture Show as well as
others in the US and UK. Pieces are in New York, Ft. Lauderdale, Washington,
Melbourne, London, Buenos Aires, Edinburgh and elsewhere. They currently have
work showing in Aberfeldy Gallery, Perthshire, Touched by Scotland in Oyne, Sun
Gallery in Newburgh, Fife, and the Cat's Moustache in Creetown,
Galloway.
Art glass
by Lisa Badger at HawkHill's Lunan Church Studio is
assembled either with hand made and carved molds, which only last for a few
firings, or in one of several layering techniques, using different combinations
of powdered, crushed or cut coloured & dichroic glass, with occasional
inclusions of different metals. The pieces are then fired in a glass kiln,
often more than once. Lisa is
a New Jersey native who has
lived and created in many cities in the US and Europe. She attended Rhode
Island School of Design, School of Visual Arts/NYC, and Edinburgh College of
Art and has lectured at Parson's School of Design. She has a 30 year background in illustration,
design and applied arts, in recent years focused exclusively on
glassworking.
Colin Badger is a native of Somerset, where he has practised fine
metalwork for over 20 years. The work is either
forged and shaped on an anvil, or welded using a technique to hide the joins,
clean but still rustic in appearance. Then the piece is sandblasted, patinated
& lacquered, or painted with a hard blacksmith finish. All brass panels are
hand machined. Different
chemical recipes are used to patina the brass in a
painterly way. It is then lacquered with a
permanent finish.
The wood used is primarily
reclaimed Oak and Black Locust from America or Scottish Oak.
The Badgers relocated their studios to the UK after
a 4-year stay in the US in Spring 2005, basing themselves in Lunan Bay, near
Montrose, Scotland. Lisas studio is in Lunan church, an inspiring space
retired in 1998 by the Church of Scotland.
